as long as she’s fine with the “little things” — the constant whitewashing of us within narratives that are supposed to portray, well, us (akira, avatar, dragonball z, not to mention within things like firefly, which draw from our culture but doesn’t actually feature any of our people), the constant lumping together of our various ethnicities and nationalities, the history of yellowface, plus the orientalism that is so present in representations of us, the desexualisation of asian men (long duk dong & charlie chan anyone? + the recent han lee? or something on two broke girls). as long as she’s fine with being called “dragon lady” and “lotus flower” and as long as she’s fine with unsolicited demands from strangers to “love them long time.”

as long as she’s fine with the fact that apparently asians are the most bullied in schools, with the fact that depression and mental illness rates are rising among asians (especially depression in asian women). as long as she’s fine with being described with words like “spicy” and “exotic” and other objectifying, degrading, and completely dehumanising words.

Of course you would take it as a compliment. You’re white. You have the privilege to not have to think about your own race every damn day. If a PoC said that, you’d take it as a compliment because it just boosts your ego. There are hardly any negative stigmas attached to being white.

If a PoC wished that they were white and that wish was granted, nothing that would negatively impact them would be gained. If a white person were to wish that they were any PoC and that wish was granted, a lot of things that would negatively impact them would be gained. And those white people who say stuff like “Asians are so cute, I wish I was Asian” or “Black people are so hot, I wish I was Black” or “Latinos are so sexy, I wish I was one” etc… has developed this idealized view of that specific ethnic group which effectively ignores all the negative aspects. It’s basically them not thinking at all what it is really like for PoC’s in the world. These girls who wish they were Asian, they don’t take into consideration the name-calling, the mock Chinese (fuck, I’ve gotten mock Chinese and I’m not even anything close to Chinese), the rigid stereotype of the studious Asian and it’s counterpart of the bubbly airheaded Asian girl, living in two different worlds of the Asian household and the outside world, being trapped into nearly everything you do be some sort of stereotype…

Most of the time, it’s always specifically an Asian girl that they wish that they were.

And guess what. The media will support this view. In fact, they cultivate these ideas, especially in the case of Asian women. In fact, you will hardly ever hear a white male wish that they were an Asian man. Why? Because Asian women are fetishized and lusted after and put on this ridiculous pedestal of the “foreign beauty” while Asian men are labeled as undesirable stock because they’re “too shy” or “too wimpy” etc…

So why should any Asian person take “I wish I was Asian, they are so cute” as a compliment when it’s clearly a product of misguided ideas what an Asian is like?

I am the only white person on my block. It is a korean area. I know plenty of white men who wish they were asian. I know what asian is like I’ve lived here my whole life. I dont wish I was asian. Im okay with being white. But if I were to turn asian, I would not be negatively impacted. Because I wouldn’t be the only stupid bitch who cant speak korean anymore. It does go both ways. Please dont take yourself so seriously on tumblr everybody.
